Congratulations, you survived a year of college! Now it’s time to face the music, say farewell to your best buds, and put college life on hold until next semester. Moving out can be daunting considering all the waste accumulated throughout your time in school. I can guarantee that you and many other students have ended up with more than what you started with. It’s important to be mindful and not toss everything in the trash! Most of the time, people are familiar with how to recycle bottles or cans but are unsure or unaware of particular college fundamentals that can be recycled – like ink cartridges, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, toothbrushes, and even razor blades! Recycling is such an important practice for protecting the environment and your future. Start by creating three piles: keep, discard, and donate. Keep reading to find out how to effectively manage your waste for campus move out day!

What to Keep on Campus Move Out Day

When getting ready to head back home, try and recycle as much as you can!  Don’t be wasteful with the items you have accumulated throughout your college semester. There are plenty of small things you can do to help reduce waste. Not only can this save the environment, but also save your bank account! For instance, if you barely took notes in a particular course, you can easily reuse that notebook for a future class. If you are going to dispose of assignments, essays, exams, or anything put on paper – please dispose of those items properly by tossing them in a recycling bin. Recycling bins are available on all college campuses and throughout your local community, so there is no excuse to not recycle! Keep all the cardboard boxes and reuse them for a future move in or out dates, and turn to reusable bags for grocery shopping. Keep as much as you can, because that in itself is a form of recycling- every little bit counts!

Discard – Special Disposal Considerations

Items that are completely non-reusable should not be automatically dumped in the trash! Certain items require special disposal procedures. This list of items can include binders, mini fridges, toner cartridges, batteries, electronics, and much more. Practically all colleges have a recycling program to discard special items to help you with this process. Please take the time to do research on what and how certain items should be disposed of the proper way. Mother nature will really appreciate it!

What to Donate at the End of the Semester

The end of each semester is a chaotic and stressful time for students. Try to make your plans about what to donate before things get too crazy. Waiting until the last minute will do no good for you or the environment because you will most likely try to overload everything into your suitcase or neglectfully toss everything into the trash. Do not throw away perfectly good items just because you don’t want to pack them up! Consider what you would like to take home or donate to organizations – throwing things away should be your last resort. Most colleges and universities have donation programs already established and ready to help you during campus move out day – so take full advantage! Some items that you can donate include clothing, books, furniture, mirrors, electronics, cleaning supplies, non-perishable food, and much more! Planning ahead can tremendously benefit the local community, your college campus, and most importantly, the environment!
