4 Earth-Friendly Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is here! This is the time of the year to begin anew and do an annual deep clean of your living space. Here at Cali Carting, we believe in the ever-important clean motto – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The trick to incorporating the three R’s into your cleaning routine is get rid of the ‘throw it away’ mentality and instead ask yourself “How can this item benefit me or my community?” If you want a home that is both sparkling clean and green, read on for some earth-friendly spring cleaning tips.

1. Donate Instead of Dispose

As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. To reduce the size of your contribution to your local landfill, try to instead pass on whatever you don’t want anymore to someone else. Old clothes, shoes, accessories, games, linens, and even furniture can be donated to a local shelter or goodwill box for others that are less fortunate. If you donate, your spring cleaning will actually benefit another person’s life too!

2. Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

For items that are too worn to be donated, hold off on throwing them away and instead recycle them! Many everyday items, which include clothes, furniture, and electronics, can be recycled and repurposed again, oftentimes as another product. Aside from your used and worn items, also always remember to recycle all paper, plastics, and cans that you have used instead of throwing them into the trash. Contact your local municipality’s recycling plant to see what exactly they accept, and what your recycled items can be used for.

3. Start a Compost Bin

Instead of disposing of your waste, reuse it by composting it! A compost bin transforms biodegradable waste into a rich soil conditioner that can help your garden and front lawn grow. Any organic waste – such as food, paper, grass, and leaves – can be compostable. What’s even better is that a compost bin is easy to begin – all you need is a large container, a recyclable material to provide a surface at the bottom, and then you are ready to begin throwing your compostable waste into it to create a beautiful addition to your gardening routine!

4. Reduce for the Future

Spring cleaning is the best time to change your lifestyle habits in order to keep your home – and life! – clean. To cut down on the amount of time you spend spring cleaning next year, start a new habit of reducing the amount of waste you produce on a daily basis. Always try to buy items with reusable or less packaging, and make an effort to cut down on the amount of single-use items (such as plastic utensils) altogether.
